The Race 6.5

IRC has become the official tracking partner for the Yacht Race 650 2008-09.

The Race 650 is a global sailing race for one or two people in 6.5 metre mini transat open 650 yachts. Starting in April 2008 and taking approximately 12-15 months, the route takes sailors round the world predominantly following the tradewinds.

The route includes a start and finish in Brazil (Bahia), and stops at Grenada, Panama canal, Hawaii, Tonga, Vanuatu, Cocos Keeling, Mauritius, South Africa, St. Helena, Brazil.

The race and the route have never been run before in Open 650 yachts; however the organiser, Brian Caldwell from Hawaii, has completed the route in 1996. Open 650 yachts do regularly race across oceans – including the well known Mini Transat race from France to Brazil that takes place on alternate years that attracts 70 competitors.

Final entry numbers will not be known until late 2007 / early 2008.

The race is not officially sanctioned by the French mini transat Open 650 class association, however will be run under mini transat measurement rules with additional safety and communication considerations.
